| Manyōgana is an ancient writing system that uses Chinese characters to write Japanese language. Manyōgana uses kanji for their phonetic value (借音 shakuon; "borrowed sound") rather than their meaning (借訓 shakkun; "borrowed meaning"). The name derives from the Manyōshū – the kana of the Manyōshū.
Does anyone else know anything else about this old writing system? Some thing other than what I can find on the internet. | |

| Isn't manyōgana like, a precursor to hiragana? Don't think you'd need to use it much it nowadays in your Japanese study. But I don't really know. - Nantalith wrote:

| Oh, I know I don't need it, I'm interested in it - I'm a linguist. | |

| Aha. You should converse with Chanie. You can share linguist notes, lol. Seriously tho, she did a course in different writing systems and whatnot. They did a module on chinese and japanese writing if I'm not mistaken. | |
