Japanese ingredients in CT Empty
PostSubject: Japanese ingredients in CT   Japanese ingredients in CT EmptyMon May 24, 2010 6:32 am

Well, I love Japanese food!!!
And my girlfriend and I are coming back to Cape Town, YAY! cheers
The down side is we leave all the yummy Japanese munchies behind.
This could be a silly question but it has been awhile since I have been back to CT.

Is there any place we can get some Japanese ingredients? scratch
Like miso, okonomiyaki sauce, sake, udon, daikon, etc?

I know sushi is everywhere and trust me I am gonna attack CT to find the best sushi place but for the purpose of cooking does anyone know of any place?

Thanks beautiful people

I get my sushi ingrediants from the Asian Supermarket (actually a restaurant, but also sells japa ingrediants) on Lower Main Road in Observatory. I get my other ingrediants from Korea Mart on Main right next to McDonalds in Observatory. They stock several types of seaweed, rices, noodles and pickled stuff straight from Korea, and as close to Japa-authentic as I've seen. I'm not too sure about fresh daikon etc. That's the best I've seen so far. pig Ooooh! and shiitake mushs!

Hmm If you`re talking about the oblong daikon then I believe they sell it at a wholesale vegetable market in Maitland. Pretty cheap place to buy veggies in general, too. They tend to have an array of veggies... even stock hakusai but I reckon that that`s available in most supermarkets.

Ah... will have to get the specific name for you at some other point :p

Komati in Lower Main Observatory has selected Japanese stuff as well but they can be expensive. I use the Korean Mart and Mainland China Food Market in Claremont. There is one in Rondebosch but I don't know where. Mainland China has mostly frozen goods but occasionally fresh. They sell fresh tofu as well.
